ZEST meets demand for units in Darwin
The 2006 ABS Census of population and housing reported that about 42 per cent of dwellings in the Territory were rented (including public housing), compared to about 27 per cent nationally. As such, the availability of rental accommodation is relatively more important in the Territory
compared to elsewhere in Australia. Vacancy rates across the Territory have fallen substantially in the past decade, making rental accommodation more difficult to obtain. The Real Estate Institute of the Northern Territory (REINT) reports that, in 2009, the average vacancy rate was 1.8 per cent in Darwin, 1.2 per cent in Palmerston, per cent in Katherine and 0.8 per cent in Alice Springs (Chart 9.3). Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census data indicate that the average household size for the Darwin region fell from 2.91 to 2.64 persons |
